Radio Industry - Initial Research

Radio 1

  • Target Audience:
    • The target audience for Radio 1 listeners is people between the ages of 15 - 29, as it provides listeners with a distinctive mix of contemporary music and spoken word genres that will fit their interests. 
  • Music Genres: 
    • At night, Radio 1 provides alternative genres including electronica, hip hop, dance and indie, and during the day usually shuffles the most popular contemporary music of the time in order to appeal to their target demographic 
  • Spoken Word Genres:
    • Includes documentaries on different music artists and genres, for example what it's like being an artist during the pandemic and 'The tracks that shaped drum and bass'.
    • Radio 1 also includes podcasts like 'Di's Salon' that provide aspects of comedy

Radio 3

  • Target Audience:
    • Significantly weighted towards the older age range. The average age of listeners in terms of reach is 57 years old, but in terms of hours it's 61 years old. This suggest that the older the listener is, the longer that they listen to the Radio. This means that the audience for channel 3 is significantly older than for Radio 1. 
  • Music Genres:
    • Commonly centers on classical music and opera, however other genres sometimes feature in the broadcast including jazz, world music, drama, culture and the arts. 
  • Spoken Word Genres:
    • Radio 3 include spoken word genres about music genres mainly but also include other topics that the listeners may want to tune into, for example dramatic real life topics and situations that people have found themselves in
    • An example of a spoken word genre in this ways to experience classical music, which fits into the music genres broadcasted for Radio 3. Another includes 'Postcards from Composers'

Radio 4:

  • Target Audience:
    • The target audience for Radio 4 is between 34-51 years old, with the average listener being 56 years old. The demographic that Radio 4 gears towards is A, B and C1 (known as replenishers) 
  • Music Genres:
    • It doesn't operate in the same way that Radio 1 and Radio 3 do, as it's viewed as a speech only radio station
    • There are some music focused programmes on Radio 4 such as desert island discs, however in every day programming they only use small music clips
  • Spoken Word Genres:
    • Spoken word genres are important to Radio 4 as it's viewed as a speech-only radio platform, not focusing on playing music
    • Spoken word broadcasts include news, drama, comedy, science and history.
