Ownership and Franchise:
- Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is the sixth major installment in the Assassin's Creed Franchise
- The genre for the game is Action- Adventure and Stealth
- Was originally released for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii U in 2013, and a month later was released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows
- Set in the fictional history of real world events, specifically during the 18th century Caribbean during the golden age of piracy
- Follows the notorious Welsh pirate Edward Kenney, and the attempted establishment of a Republic of Pirates is a significant plot point
- The unique selling point of the game was the wider exploration of the open world map (something which wasn't seen in previous Assassin's Creed games), third person based land exploration, melee combat and stealth system
- One of the best selling games of 2013, where it sold over 15 million copies as of 2020
Maximising Income:
- Assassin's Creed is able to maximise income through different forms of merchandise, including a book series that was created, consisting of 17 books that link to the games

- it was released online and a hard copy was released too, both including an online multiplayer format
Marketing and Advertising:
- The game was advertised through many different formats, including a trailer, through TV advertising and posters to promote the game
- It was also advertised through the game console websites, for example it was promoted on the website for Xbox and Playstation
- Did trailer for specific missions, for example 'The Heist' was included as a trailer on it's own
- Adverts focus on the Naval Combat mainly along with the open world aspect because that was something that offered the game a unique selling point
Maintaining and Developing the Audience:
- The game kept fans playing due to the inline multiplayer aspect, meaning that the gaming experience that audiences had would never be the same every time they played the game
- Players can save up money to buy additional weapons, items, Jackdaw Appearance items and hideout upgrades
- Can't change the main character that you're playing as- one of the main criticisms because the character could get boring for the player to keep using
- There are many fan communities on sites such as Reddit and Facebook alongside other forms of social media
- Fans of the Assassin's Creed franchise usually are very active audiences who tend to go for games with a similar premise
Reception:
- The reception of the game was quite good as it has sold 15 million copies as of 2020
- People had an issue with the game as they said it didn't fit in with the previous games, almost making the game seem like it shouldn't have been pat of the franchise
- People sometimes describe it as one of the best pirate games but the worse Assassin's Creed game
- Some issues with naval combat, as fans of the game said it could be considered overpowered, making the battles quite boring and repetitive
- People like it for the naval combat and open world style of game, but also like the missions that you're sent on
- Some people criticised the tutorial was way too long and dragged out, however some also argue that this made the game good, as it explained quite a ,ot for the time it was explained in
Regulation:
- PEGI regulate the video games industry, looking at many different factors such as violence, inappropriate language, drugs and sexual activity included in the game in order to give it an appropriate age rating
- They provide age classifications for 38 different european countries
- Assassins Creed was rated an 18 because it included very mature themes that wasn't suitable for young audiences, as it included close up and gory gun and knife battles that are usually very graphic, along with strong language that would only be suitable for mature audiences
Text:
- There were some issues surrounding ethnicity during this game. As it was set in the past, there was some subtle themes of slavery and racism towards these slaves included in the game
- There wasn't any representation of strong women in this game, as the character you could play as was a straight white male
- There was no inclusion of sexuality in the game, as the game followed the traditional ideologies of the time, as they wanted to strive for historical accuracy
- The game used quite simple controls which you had to use with different combinations
Assassin's Creed Franchise:
- Assassins Creed was created by Ubisoft's development teams and published by Ubisoft, the first release being published on 13th November 2007. The Assassins Creed franchise is made up of 12 games with the most recent being released on the 10th November 2020.
- The game had ideas taken from the Prince of Persia series, with a similar games premise but obviously the main character was no longer a prince but an assassin who had to work for what he wanted
- After the release of the first game, the Ubisoft team decided to create other game set in different historical periods whilst striving for historical accuracy in their game play
- Designed the game to include 'free run highways' to make it easier for the player to move around the map
- Included recurring themes throughout the games, including a theme of redemption which was usually the reason for the missions. Other themes included revelation and understanding throughout the gameplay as your character discovered new secrets and information
